In Odeta Catana words it tells the story about “a life-long love and the ways our grannies raised us, taught, took care and annoyed us. It’s a story about reconciliation and coming of age. About Latvian population gradually growinging older. About awfully low pensions. About generations living together happily, about overcaring and family bonds.” First of all, each of performers interviewed their own grandmothers. Afterwards, they put all these interviews together, and they wrote a screenplay with the help of some screenwriters. She photographed all these grandmothers who are still alive. Odeta Catana is a photographer currently living and working in Berlin. Her projects often reflect on the concerns of the human condition and use a documentarian approach. For the second edition of MagiC Carpets, she created an emotional photo storytelling capturing a mixture of portraits and details of the old women she interviewed with the New Theatre Institute of Latvia, Riga (2019). These women shared stories, experiences and opinions, talking about several topics as: aging, intergenerational relationships, and the daily struggles of the elderly in a city like Riga. For the exhibition, the artist has recreated the portraits of the nine elderly women through photographic stories in the form of mind maps.
