Marta Elīna Martinsone’s work is linked with the story of Latvia. She has recorded a film in Romania with kids. There she met with local inhabitants, as well as did workshops for children introducing the basics of acting and storytelling. Her starting point was the search for national identity, mythologising of history and how important the history is to any nation.

Marta Elīna Martinsone is Latvian theatre and film director. In her work, she analyses the relationship between reality and fiction, placing special attention on the existential conflicts that arise between these two worlds. Identifying herself as more a storyteller than an artist, Martinsone, during her residency in Slon (Romania), was immediately intrigued by the history of the village, especially in the period of Roman domination, when the village was part of the region called Dacia. The film shot during the META Cultural Foundation residency, represents the male mythicization of history, and the small community of Slon. The protagonists and actors in the film are children, overturning the male chauvinist nature of an already-written story. The outcome of this extensive research project was a mix between a film production and a documentary on the Dacian community in Slon, and its connection to the Roman Empire.
