ARTWORK

DELIRIUM AND MEMORY, 2019

Collage on fabric tablecloth

Jelena Škulienė lives and works in Vilnius, Lithuania. Her artistic interests include text and textile relationships, images of daily life, daily conversations, memory, social engagement, local communities and performative actions. She uses various approaches and materials for her installations: metal, written texts, fabrics, interviews and surveys.

During her residency, with Ideias Emergentes, Škulienė created a large cloth together with the elderly community of Guimarães, Portugal. After spending time with the community to get to know local narratives, the stories and words took form and were pasted by the artist and the participants onto the cloth: on one side, in red, it held positive memories and on the other, in green, negative ones.

When considering her work, it is essential to highlight the relationship between the territory and the textile market, which is historically woven into social memory; besides being an economic industrial factor, it is a common thread in the stories of many people from Guimarães.

The visitors can immerse themselves in this collective memory.
